A creamy, fruity buttercream bursting with blueberry flavor. Perfect for cakes, cupcakes, macarons, or as a filling for desserts. You can make it with fresh, frozen, or freeze-dried blueberries for a versatile and vibrant frosting.

Ingredients

Scale

🛒 Ingredients (for about 2 cups of frosting):

For the Blueberry Puree/Filling:

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • Optional: 1 tablespoon blueberry jam for extra sweetness

For the Buttercream:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted

  • 24 tablespoons blueberry puree or jam (from above)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 12 tablespoons milk or cream (as needed for consistency)

  • Optional: pinch of salt to balance sweetness

Instructions

📝 Instructions:

Step 1: Make Blueberry Puree

  1. In a small saucepan, combine blueberries, sugar, and lemon juice.

  2. Cook over medium heat until berries release juice and soften (about 5–7 minutes).

  3. Mash gently with a fork or use an immersion blender for a smooth puree.

  4. Strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove skins if desired. Let cool completely.

Step 2: Prepare Buttercream

  1. In a large bowl, beat softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy (2–3 minutes).

  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low until incorporated.

  3. Add cooled blueberry puree or jam and vanilla extract; beat until smooth and fully combined.

  4. Adjust consistency with milk or cream if needed. Frosting should be thick enough to pipe but soft enough to spread.

Step 3: Frost Cakes, Cupcakes, or Macarons

  1. Apply a crumb coat if frosting a layered cake. Chill for 15–20 minutes.

  2. Frost the cake or cupcakes smoothly or pipe decorative swirls.

  3. Optional: top with fresh blueberries, edible glitter, or sprinkles for garnish.

Notes

  • Freeze-Dried Option: Grind freeze-dried blueberries into a powder and mix into buttercream for concentrated flavor without extra liquid.
  • Macaron Filling: Use a thicker puree or jam to avoid making macaron shells soggy.
  • Make Ahead: Frosting can be made a day ahead and stored in the fridge; bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.
