Description

A rich, creamy chocolate frosting made with smooth cream cheese and either cocoa powder or melted chocolate. Perfect for cakes, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, or as a decadent spread. Easy to make and irresistibly chocolatey!

Ingredients

Scale

🛒 Ingredients (for about 2 cups of frosting):

Base Frosting:

  • 8 oz (1 package) cream cheese, softened

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (optional)

  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Chocolate Options:

  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder or

  • 4 oz melted semi-sweet chocolate, cooled slightly

Optional Add-ins / Adjustments:

  • 12 tablespoons milk or heavy cream to thin

  • Pinch of salt to balance sweetness

  • Dark chocolate for a richer flavor

Instructions

📝 Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare Base
In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese (and butter, if using) until smooth and creamy.

Step 2: Add Chocolate

  • If using cocoa powder: sift it and add to the cream cheese, mixing until fully incorporated.

  • If using melted chocolate: fold gently into the cream cheese mixture until smooth.

Step 3: Sweeten & Flavor
Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Beat on low speed to avoid sugar dust, then increase to medium until light and fluffy.

Step 4: Adjust Consistency
Add milk or cream 1 teaspoon at a time until frosting reaches desired spreadable consistency. For piping, keep slightly firmer.

Step 5: Use or Store
Spread immediately over cooled cakes, cupcakes, or cinnamon rolls. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days; bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.

Notes

  • No Butter Version: Skip butter for a tangier, softer frosting. Chill before piping.
  • Cinnamon Rolls: Spread while rolls are slightly warm for a glaze-like effect.
  • Rich Chocolate: Use dark chocolate or add a teaspoon of espresso powder to intensify flavor.
  • Make Ahead: Frosting can be made 1 day ahead; keep covered in the fridge.
