Description

A crunchy, buttery, and sweet dessert that combines the classic crunch of saltine crackers with rich toffee and a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar. Inspired by churros, this easy-to-make treat is perfect for snacking, gifting, or serving at parties.

Ingredients

Scale

🛒 Ingredients (for one 9×13-inch pan):

Base Layer:

  • 4045 saltine crackers (enough to cover the pan)

Toffee Topping:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Cinnamon Sugar Topping:

  • 12 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

Optional Decorations:

  • ½ cup chocolate chips (milk, dark, or white)

  • Chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)

  • Drizzle of melted chocolate

Instructions

📝 Instructions:

Step 1: Prep the Pan
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a 9×13-inch pan with foil or parchment paper, leaving overhang for easy removal. Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer, covering the entire bottom.

Step 2: Make the Toffee
In a medium saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Bring to a boil and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Pour the hot toffee evenly over the saltine crackers.

Step 3: Bake
Bake in preheated oven for 5–7 minutes, until the toffee is bubbly.

Step 4: Add Toppings
Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Add chocolate chips or nuts if using; let sit for a few minutes to melt, then spread evenly.

Step 5: Cool and Cut
Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature or in the fridge. Lift out using foil overhang and cut into squares or rectangles.

Notes

  • Crunch Factor: For extra crunch, use stale saltines—they soak up less moisture.
  • Flavor Twist: Sprinkle pumpkin spice, sea salt, or cocoa powder instead of cinnamon sugar.
  • Make Ahead: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or freeze for up to a month.
