Description

A cozy, old-fashioned ground beef and potato layered casserole made with tender sliced potatoes, seasoned hamburger, and melty cheese. This simple ground beef and potato casserole is baked to bubbly perfection—no canned soup required—making it a comforting, family-favorite dinner that tastes just like grandma used to make.

Ingredients

Scale

🛒 Ingredients (for one 9×13-inch casserole):

For the Casserole:

  • lbs ground beef

  • 45 medium russet or Yukon gold potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 1 medium onion, diced

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or Colby-Jack)

  • 1½ cups milk or heavy cream

  • 2 tablespoons butter, cubed

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)

Optional Add-ins:

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

📝 Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Beef
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and diced onion until browned. Drain excess grease. Stir in garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Set aside.

Step 2: Assemble the Layers
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom.
Top with half of the cooked ground beef, then sprinkle with 1 cup cheese.
Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, and cheese.

Step 3: Add Cream & Bake
Pour milk or cream evenly over the casserole. Dot the top with butter.
Cover tightly with foil and bake for 60 minutes.

Step 4: Finish Baking
Remove foil and bake an additional 20–25 minutes, until potatoes are fork-tender and the top is golden and bubbly. Rest 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • No Soup Version: This is a true hamburger potato casserole without soup, relying on milk and cheese for creaminess.
  • Slice Thin: Thin potatoes ensure even cooking.
  • Make It Cheesy: Add extra cheese on top during the last 10 minutes for a crispy finish.
  • Make Ahead: Assemble up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate until baking.
