Instructions

📝 Instructions:

Step 1: Bake Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round pan.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, cocoa (if using), baking powder, and salt.

  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.

  4. Gradually mix in dry ingredients alternately with milk until smooth. Add black food coloring for a deep black hue.

  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake 35–40 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.

Step 2: Shape the Cat

  1. Level the cooled cake. Cut and sculpt into a cat shape — body, head, ears, and tail (tail can be made from cake scraps or black fondant/rolled chocolate).

Step 3: Frost Cake

  1. Tint frosting black with food coloring.

  2. Apply a crumb coat and chill for 20 minutes.

  3. Frost the cake fully and smooth.

Step 4: Decorate

  • Add candy eyes or pipe white frosting for eyes.

  • Use black licorice, fondant, or piped frosting for tail, ears, and whiskers.

  • Optionally add glitter, sprinkles, or small candy pumpkins around the base for a Halloween scene.

Notes

  • Sculpting Tip: Freeze the cake slightly before carving for easier shaping.
  • Mini Version: Make cupcakes and decorate each as a tiny black cat.
  • Make Ahead: Bake cake a day ahead; frost and decorate the day of serving.
