Ingredients
5 large ripe bananas (very spotty)
1 cup whole milk (or dairy-free alternative)
15.25 oz yellow cake mix
1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1 tsp cinnamon
3/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and sliced into thin pats
1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350F and coat a 9×13-inch baking pan with non-stick spray.
Mash 2 1/2 bananas directly into the bottom of the pan to form an even base layer.
Slice the remaining 2 1/2 bananas into coins and scatter them over the mashed base.
Pour the milk evenly over the banana layers.
Sprinkle the optional walnuts or pecans over the banana layer.
Distribute the dry yellow cake mix evenly across the surface of the pan.
Place the butter pats strategically over the top of the dry cake mix.
In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle this mixture evenly over the entire pan surface.
Bake for 45-55 minutes until the center is set and the edges are bubbling.
Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
Ensure the butter is sliced thin to ensure even melting across the cake mix. The resting period is crucial for the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld effectively.
