Ingredients
5 large ripe bananas
1 cup whole milk
15.25 oz yellow cake mix
1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1 tsp ground cinnamon
3/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and sliced into 24 thin pats
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350F and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan thoroughly.
Mash 2 1/2 bananas using a fork or potato masher directly in the bottom of the pan and spread into an even layer.
Slice the remaining 2 1/2 bananas into thin rounds and scatter them over the mashed base.
Pour the milk evenly over the banana layers.
Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the milk and bananas.
In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar and ground cinnamon, then sprinkle this mixture over the cake mix layer.
Distribute the cold butter pats evenly over the top of the cake mix.
Sprinkle the chopped walnuts over the top if using.
Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling.
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
Use the brownest, spottiest bananas you can find for maximum sweetness. You can substitute the walnuts with pecans or omit them entirely for a nut-free version. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
