Description
This fuss-free dessert combines tender, cinnamon-spiced apples with a golden, buttery oat streusel. By using a slow cooker, the natural juices of the fruit caramelize perfectly for a deep, comforting flavor. Using a kitchen towel under the lid ensures the topping stays crisp rather than soft, making this the perfect reliable sweet treat for any occasion, all without needing to hover over an oven.
Ingredients
6–7 large or 8-10 small mixed apples (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Pink Lady)
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
3/4 cup brown sugar (divided)
3 tsp cinnamon (divided)
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1/4 tsp salt
Instructions
Spray a 5-quart slow cooker with non-stick spray and set to low heat.
Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/4 inch thick pieces.
In a large bowl, toss apple slices with lemon juice, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
Transfer apple mixture to the slow cooker.
In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar, remaining 1 tsp cinnamon, and salt.
Cut the cold butter into the oat mixture using a pastry cutter or fork until crumbly.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple layer.
Place a clean kitchen towel over the slow cooker opening and cover with the lid.
Cook on low for 3 hours until the fruit is tender and the topping is golden.
Notes
The kitchen towel technique is essential to absorb excess moisture and keep the topping crisp. Do not use instant oats as they will become mushy. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
