Description
A warm, crusty loaf bursting with herb-infused flavor, perfect for busy meals or as a table centerpiece. This beginner-friendly Modern American bread uses a Dutch oven for a crackly crust and adapted to be halal/non-alcoholic.
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
1½ teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons instant yeast
4 cloves garlic
1 tbsp dried Italian herbs (or 2 tbsp fresh chopped herbs)
1¼ cups warm (110°F) water
2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
Combine flour, salt, sugar, yeast, garlic, herbs in a bowl.
Add warm water and olive oil; stir until shaggy dough forms.
Knead dough on floured surface for 8–10 minutes until elastic.
Grease a bowl, cover dough, and let rise 1–1½ hours.
Punch down, shape into a round loaf, and let rest 10 minutes.
Preheat Dutch oven 30 minutes; transfer dough onto parchment paper inside the pot.
Bake at 450°F for 45 minutes.
Notes
For chewier texture, use bread flour.
Garlic powder (¼ tsp per clove) can substitute fresh cloves.
Replace Italian herbs with oregano + rosemary for a woodier taste.
Use parchment paper for easy dough transfer.
Ensure water is 110–115°F to activate yeast.
Avoid overkneading; dough should stretch, not tear.
Preheated Dutch oven ensures even baking.
