Description

Soft, warm homemade hot dog buns with a tender crumb and glossy finish, perfect for cookouts or casual meals. Made without pork or alcohol, these buns combine yeast, eggs, and butter for bakery-style results in 1 hour 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Active dry yeast, 2 teaspoons
Sugar, 2 tablespoons
Warm milk, 1 cup
Bread flour, 2¾ cups
Salt, ½ teaspoon
Eggs, 2
Butter, 3 tablespoons

Instructions

In a large bowl, mix yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar, and warm milk. Let rest 5 minutes until frothy.
Combine 2½ cups flour, remaining 1 teaspoon sugar, and salt in a separate bowl.
Add proofed yeast mixture, 1 egg, and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until shaggy dough forms.
Rest dough 5 minutes. Knead on floured surface 3-4 minutes, adding remaining flour as needed.
Return dough to bowl, cover, and let rest 30 minutes.
Shape into 8 buns, place on baking sheet, and let rest 15 minutes.
Beat remaining egg as egg wash. Brush onto buns.
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes or until golden.

Notes

Quick-rise yeast can replace active dry yeast.
Butter must be melted before adding to dough.
Store buns in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Freeze baked buns for up to 2 months.
