Description

A grilled sandwich that blends crispy rye, melted cheese, and savory beef for bold, comforting bites. Quick, customizable, and perfect for any occasion with a balance of textures and flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

1 pound ground beef
1 large onion
8 slices rye bread
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices cheddar cheese
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (use non-alcoholic substitute)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat, add ground beef, and cook until browned (5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat with a spoon.
Add sliced onions and sauté until softened and golden (4-5 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.
Transfer mixture to a bowl and let rest for 5 minutes before assembling to prevent moisture from forming.
In a medium bowl, whisk mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and Worcestershire sauce.
Butter 4 rye bread slices. Place 2 slices on a plate then evenly divide the beef mixture and Swiss cheese between them.
Top with another slice of bread and spread the sauce on the final pieces. Press down gently.
Heat a skillet over medium heat, add the sandwiches, and cook for 3-4 minutes per side until golden and cheese is melted.

Notes

Use fresh ground beef for optimal texture. Substitute turkey or plant-based meat for dietary preferences.
Rye bread toasts best—use thick-cut for structural integrity. Replace with sourdough if needed.
Cold butter ensures proper browning. Use vegan butter for a dairy-free version.
Room-temperature cheese melts evenly. Swap Swiss with Gouda or provolone for stronger flavor.
Use non-alcoholic Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce as a substitute.
Leftover sandwiches reheat well in a skillet for 1-2 minutes per side.
