Description
Sweet, slightly tangy red candied cherries are a quick and flavorful addition to desserts or snacks. Made with fresh cherries, sugar, and a hint of lemon and almond extract, these cherries caramelize into a flavorful syrup that’s simple to make and even easier to enjoy.
Ingredients
2 cups fresh cherries, pitted
1 cup sugar (use brown sugar for richer flavor)
1.5 cups water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
0.25 teaspoon almond extract (vanilla extract can be substituted)
Instructions
Pit the cherries. Set them aside in a bowl.
In a large saucepan, combine the pitted cherries, sugar, water, and lemon juice.
Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium heat.
Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for approximately 1 hour, stirring occasionally until the cherries become tender and the syrup thickens.
Stir in almond extract (or vanilla extract of choice) and remove from heat.
Let the cherries cool slightly before transferring to a jar or serving bowl.
Notes
For best results, use fresh, in-season cherries.
Stir the syrup occasionally during cooking to avoid sticking.
Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
These cherries make excellent toppings for desserts or enjoy them as a snack straight from the jar.
